Composition I


Dabrowski p. 24.

She identifies three apocalyptic riders surrounded by groups of hunched, praying figures, separated by bushes and foliage and set against the background of mountains with several walled cities, whose diagonal axis suggests the motion of tumbling down.
Weiss, however, suggests that the picture represents a pleasant outing of two men and a woman on horseback, a theme that she connects to the subjects of Nordic myths and legends of the tribes within Kandinsky's early ethnographic experience and to his fascination with folk art and legends of old Russia. Regrettably, we have little original evidence as to what Kandinsky intended the subject matter to be.

The execution of the work adds to this impression: based on the reproductions, forms without heavy contours flow into each other and are set into relief by their adjacent colors. This is especially clear in the lower section of the painting. The spatial structure of the work forgoes the traditional spatial conventions, and the pictorial elements are tightly knit into a pattern that indicates space only by overlapping forms.
